This How-To
assumes you have tools to remove both steering wheels. You can rent a steering
wheel puller from most reputable auto parts stores. It's also pretty easy to
make your own (I did because I was too lazy to run to auto parts store to rent
the tool).
After examining the airbag pigtails, I thought of just pushing the 1st gen pigtail into the 2nd gen airbag. It almost fit, but I was not satisfied with quality of the connection, so I opted to solder in 2nd gen pigtals from my donor colum. I did the same for horn connector.

Splice the 2nd Gen Airbag/Horn connectors onto 1st gen Clockspring. Clocksprings are practically interchangeable, but the wiring harness at the collum is different, so you either solder where I show or in the colum harness, I chose this for ease and simplicity.

Finished results. Rim diameter is a bit thicker, so it feels nicer. Overall diameter is the same.
